Why Klaviyo's native reports leave money on the table
Klaviyo is the best ecommerce email and SMS platform on the market. Its native analytics are genuinely good — you can see flow revenue, campaign performance, and list growth without leaving the platform.
But once you're past about $1M in annual revenue, three blind spots start costing you real money:
- No cross-channel attribution. Klaviyo claims credit for revenue when an email click precedes a purchase. So does Meta. So does Google Ads. So does TikTok. If you sum all the "attributed" revenue across your tools, it's typically 1.5-2x your actual revenue. You need a single source of truth.
- No product-level margin context. Klaviyo tells you a flow drove $14K in revenue. It doesn't tell you that flow drove sales of your lowest-margin SKU, so the actual gross profit was $2,800. Without margin context, you're optimizing the wrong things.

- Revenue per recipient (RPR). Total revenue divided by total recipients across the period. This is the cleanest measure of "how much is each person on my list worth." Healthy ecommerce brands target $0.50-$2.00 per recipient per send.
- Revenue per email sent. Total revenue / total emails sent. Diagnoses whether you're sending too much (RPS dropping) or too little (list under-monetized).
- List growth rate. New subscribers minus unsubscribes minus hard bounces, as a % of starting list size. Should be positive every month. If it's not, your acquisition is broken or your content is hurting more than helping.
- Flow revenue by flow. Welcome series, abandoned cart, browse abandonment, post-purchase, win-back. Each should be benchmarked individually. The welcome series alone should drive 25-35% of total email revenue for a healthy ecommerce brand.
- Campaign revenue by campaign. Lets you spot patterns: which subject line styles, which sending times, which audience segments perform best. Most brands have one or two segments that drive 60% of campaign revenue — finding them is worth millions.
- Deliverability rate. Inbox placement, not just "sent." Should be 95%+ at minimum. If you drop below 90%, you have a sender reputation problem that needs urgent attention.
- Revenue attribution: email vs. SMS vs. paid. Use a tool that does proper multi-touch attribution rather than last-click. This usually reduces email's claimed credit by 30-40%, which is uncomfortable but accurate.
